Certification Drives Industry Value
Following our first ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I certification exam of the year at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, PACA staff was pleased to receive the following email from Derrick Duff of Stone Valley Construction Services.

I would like to thank you on behalf of Stone Valley Construction Services for the ACI Concrete Test Technician Course held at Penn College, February 16, 2021. In the middle of a terrible pandemic and awful weather, you persevered and delivered a great program. We all remarked how well the information was presented. The quality of the instructors and how well the facility worked for the classroom and practical environments.

Thanks again for a job well done and we will see you in 5 years!

All the best,

Derrick

A very big thank you to all of our host facilities, instructors, proctors, and volunteers for making this program so successful year in and year out and for making PACA's certification program the industry gold star.

PACA's Emerging Leaders Academy - Here We Go!
Yesterday saw the official launch of the inaugural class of the 2021 PACA Emerging Leaders Academy (PELA).

The classmates, our Instructor Greg Coker and PACA staff met virtually, made introductions, outlined the expectations for the 10-month program, openly expressed concerns and more.

Coker highlighted his "guiding principles" for the PELA class including building meaningful, long lasting relationships; the high-tech, high-touch format of the program; the "Rs" that will be covered - Reengage, Recommit, Reinvent, Reset, Rebuild; and expressed how all deserve hope, motivation and inspiration.

The pillars of the program were also covered during the online meeting - industry knowledge, geographic knowledge, professional networking, leadership development and enhancing one's trajectory. The full 10-month agenda was reviewed in more detail and the classmates had the opportunity to introduce themselves to each other.

We, the PACA staff, along with Mr. Coker, were thrilled to begin this brand new program for 2021. The classmates also expressed their enthusiasm to get started and the feedback for the program is already extremely positive.

Here's to a great year! And a very special thank you to our PELA sponsors - Civil & Environmental Consultants, Martin Stone Quarries, New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. and Union Quarries!

Arc Flashing & the National Fire Protection Association Standard
MSHA covers electrical safety in 30 CFR Part 56, Subpart K (Electricity). Because arc flashing is not included in this Subpart, mine operators are encouraged to follow the National Fire Protection Association Standard 70E, which is the standard for electrical safety in the workplace. This will also assist you in complying with OSHA 1910 Subpart S (electrical) and OSHA 1926 Subpart K (medical and first aid).

This NFPA standard addresses electrical safety-related work practices, safety-related maintenance requirements, and other administrative controls for employee workplaces that are necessary for the practical safeguarding of employees relative to the hazards associated with electrical energy during activities such as the installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, and demolition of electric conductors, electric equipment, signaling and communications conductors and equipment, and raceways. This standard also includes safe work practices for employees performing other work activities that can expose them to electrical hazards.
